If Muna's new record was an oracle deck
You're reading GET IT TOGETHER, a weekly newsletter about punk/indie/pop music and visual art from a queer-feminist perspective, exploring things that are adjacent to my own creative practice.
This is a free post, but you can support my work for $5/month by becoming a newsletter supporter or sharing this with a friend. Thanks for reading.
In honor of Muna Day (aka whenever I get to see Muna in concert) I wrote up each song on their new album Dancing On The Wall as if it were an oracle card. If you haven't listened to the record yet and you're looking for hot, pop-rock yearning, look no further!
Next time your playlist serves you up one of their new songs and it hits you right in the gut, here's some advice and context to take from that:
- It Gets So Hot
The universe knows when to be a real tease. External forces are creating a wall of frustration and resistance, but in a hot way. Sit in the discomfort. - Dancing On The Wall
Turns out intermittent reinforcement is addictive as fuck, but you should know better. You’re running in circles trying to catch someone or something who has other things on their mind. Behaving differently will not make someone treat you better. Stop being the victim of a hot avoidant. - Eastside Girls
Sometimes you just want to get in your car and go be a menace about town with your besties. Take a long walk with your headphones on listening to whatever lights you up. Go get yourself a treat. Pet all the dogs. Kiss all your friends. - Wannabeher
Tough love. Hard truths. You need someone to push you around and tell it like it is. But you don’t need it to come from someone else, you just need to take a long look in the mirror. - On Call
Think about your next move and write it down on paper first. Is that really the advice you’d give yourself? Do you really need to pick them up from the airport? Is that double text necessary? No, you do not. And no, it doesn’t. Choose yourself today. - So What
Seeking external validation will never lead to true happiness. Popularity won’t pay the existential bills. If you’re seeking the approval of one sacred person or project, what happens when you get it? What happens if it goes away? We all need multiple streams of emotional income. - Party's Over
You’re on a treadmill running towards change. You’re almost there. Keep going. - Big Stick
When someone says “they say that…” who’s they? Who are you talking about? Who told you you’re supposed to be somewhere by now, or have certain things? Where are you complying in advance? - Mary Jane
You’re swimming in a sea of someone else’s red flags. The best indicator of future behavior is past behavior. Now you get to decide how many times you’re going to let the same thing happen before you move on. - Girls Girl
You’re acting like just because no one can read your DMs that no one else knows what you’re up to. That pit in your stomach is reminding you that people can still talk. There’s at least one place you know you can and should be doing better. - ...Unless
What would it mean if it finally worked out this time? - Why Do I Get A Good Feeling
Something has that special ingredient that you can’t explain. Now is the time to follow your heart, trust your gut, make a big leap for the thing you want. Pay attention to the things that make you feel whole. - Buzzkiller
You’re the problem but not in the way you’re telling yourself. Stop thinking there must be something wrong with them or that someone just likes the idea of you. Self-sabotage is the real buzzkill here. Not every compliment is a love bomb. Please just enjoy the fun part for once.
