Be a cheerleader for your friends
You're reading GET IT TOGETHER, a weekly newsletter about punk/indie/pop music and visual art from a queer-feminist perspective, exploring things that are adjacent to my own creative practice.
This is a free post, but you can support my work starting at $3/month by becoming a newsletter supporter or sharing this with a friend. Thanks for reading.
It's personally been a slow season for me, making some changes, doing a lot of work-work, and drawing/painting/playing piano in any downtime I can find. Thank you to those of you following along on the art side of things - I'll be sharing more in the newsletter next week!
But some folks I know have been MAKING MOVES and I'm so happy for them. I've put a few of them below for you to celebrate with me.
Being kinda obsessed with your friends is the best.
I recently saw this post that talks about that concept, along with de-escalating (not de-valuing) your romantic relationships to build communities of care. It's been so valuable for me in recent years, building on the hypothetical promise of "scenes" that may or may not be true, but it's always been something important to me.
Go text a friend that you're thinking about them!
Ian Nichols: Community Astrologer
Ian's advising vibes are just the best. Even if you're skeptical of or new to astrology, highly recommend. He just started this Patreon, but I believe you can subscribe to a newsletter-type side of it for free as well. I never really dove deeper into astrology beyond my basic horoscope until recently and it has honestly been pretty revelatory and insightful. If you're looking for an astrologer to follow, go follow Ian!
Jeff Rosenstock playing Pier 17
Jeff Rosenstock sold out a show at Pier 17 and now there's a SECOND ONE. The first time I played a show with Jeff it was at Asbury Lanes in 2000-something small and it was just him and a computer that didn't want to cooperate. Everyone was just figuring their shit out at that point, and now a bunch of years later I get to watch folks do things like sell out big venues for multiple nights. YAY JEFF + CREW!
Becki Chernoff Ceramics
Last weekend I went to Becki's open studios and was able to see her work in person. It's beautiful. I bought two mugs and a lil dish but wanted one of everything. She was recently featured in the LA Times! So cool.
Ricky - What's the Point
Ricky (both a band and friend) put out a new album called What's the Point and it's great. Think punk roots but jangly and also fun, from San Diego. Nicest person AND group of people I've met in a long time. True gems. On the short tour we did with them last fall my bandmates all commented that this was the nicest group of people we could be on the road with and it's true! And they wrote a banger of a record! Go listen!
Sara Berks Creative Advising
Sara started one of my fav textile companies, Minna, but recently chose to close its doors. Round of applause for a phenomenal run of products and artisan collaboration! But now she's not only working on her own art but advising other folks on product development, creative direction, and strategic advising for other founders in a similar space. Probably not a ton of those on this newsletter but WHO KNOWS! I'm just using this as an excuse to celebrate her.
