On being at home

plus what I'm listening to and leftover tour shirts

You're reading GET IT TOGETHER, a weekly newsletter that covers punk/indie/pop music, visual art, and related topics. I speak from a queer-feminist perspective about things that are often adjacent to my own creative practice.

This is a free post, but you can support my work for $5/month by becoming
a newsletter supporter or sharing this with a friend. Thanks for reading.

I spent the entirety of last month on the road with Alkaline Trio and Drug Church, chasing a tour bus, losing a lot of sleep, and having an absolute world of fun on stage. For those of you who caught one of the shows, I can't thank you enough for being there. Or thank Alkaline Trio enough for having us. What a wild time.

I may have overcommitted to writing a weekly newsletter while also being on that particular tour, so I appreciate everyone's patience as I get back into the swing of things.

I've found that while managing a lot of spinning plates, being at home now gives me the space for things like:

  • waking up early
  • spending time with my planner
  • folding laundry
  • watering the houseplants
  • watering the garden
  • long showers
  • impromptu visits from friends
  • cooking overly complicated dinners
  • pourover coffee
  • catching up on Abbot Elementary
  • the long list of movies I want to watch
  • time outside with Lucy

I took this past couple of weeks to focus on those things and recharge, and I hope you all have the opportunity to do that sometimes, when the world is hell bent on making that next to impossible.

A friend recently emphasized to me that home is home. It's the most important, at the end of the day. Domestic space and domesticity itself has always held a significance to me in the context of surviving as a queer person and I no longer take it for granted.

What I've been listening to:

Rosie Tucker - Paperclip Maximizer
Their whole new record, UTOPIA NOW!, is great.

Chappel Roan - Good Luck, Babe!
Someone please for the love of god get this out of my head. I'm sorry in advance.

Japandroids - The House That Heaven Built
My playlists these days think it's still 2012, apparently.

Good Luck - Stars Were Exploding
I had been thinking about this song a lot lately and now they're reuniting at the First Unitarian Church on April 28. I can't go, but if you can be there, please let me live vicariously through you.
