Weird They/Them Summer
You're reading GET IT TOGETHER, a weekly newsletter that covers punk/indie/pop music, visual art, and related topics. I speak from a queer-feminist perspective about things that are often adjacent to my own creative practice.
This is a free post, but you can support my work for $5/month by becoming a newsletter supporter or sharing this with a friend. Thanks for reading.
It's cloudy June Gloom in Los Angeles while the jacarandas are in bloom, something I've been calling Purple Season. A new neighbor is waving a flag for fascism, coyotes are running through the streets, my dog seems kinda sad, I'm having teenage feelings and trying to buy a new couch and more plants.
Nothing seems to make any sense but I'm comforted by the fact that I don't think I'm alone in feeling simultaneously amazing and awful these days. Sometimes you just have to put yourself in a time-out to get away from it.
Slowing down to do the work has been worth it. I keep thinking of our current moment as this off-kilter zone where things feel bad so you might as well try to live your best life despite it all. Things are going surprisingly well while still simultaneously feeling like they're spinning out.
In honor of whatever the fuck this feeling is, this week I give you a new playlist called Weird They/Them Summer. It's mostly sapphic indie rock and pop, if I'm being honest, because what else is anyone even listening to? YouTube and Sp*tify versions just in case.
Put your song suggestions in the comments section! What would you like me to write about this summer? Any mutual aid links you'd like to share?
Newsletter supporters will be getting some acoustic versions and a walkthrough of my DIY in-ear monitor setup next month, as well. If you missed it, I did an advance art drop last week as well. Stay tuned!
