More Of This, Please x September 2025
You're reading GET IT TOGETHER, a weekly newsletter about punk/indie/pop music and visual art from a queer-feminist perspective, exploring things that are adjacent to my own creative practice.
This is a free post, but you can support my work for $5/month by becoming a newsletter supporter or sharing this with a friend. Thanks for reading.

I'm writing to you on my way back from Portland, Oregon, where I spent the past month. I realized I had a critical mass of friends there, many of whom I know from art and music over the years, and it was exactly the kind of recharge I needed. It reminded me how much I value deep, creative friendships and the kind of connections that feel like home.
Of course, the universe has a way of keeping things in perspective. On my way back, I got slapped in the face by forest fire smoke in Northern California. Nothing like a good reminder that the earth is on fire.
Here are a few things that have been giving me life lately:
“Love in a Fucked Up World” by Dean Spade
Anything that challenges the romance myth and marriage as the pre-determined goal of romantic relationships is my cup of tea. Spade uses this book to help us rethink how we structure love and relationships in a way that connect to our personal politics at large. It emphasizes the importance of building strong friendships and communities to the benefit of our own lives and larger social movements. It’s been affirming some of my core beliefs and reframing how both platonic and romantic love can be revolutionary.
Euro-Country by CMAT
CMAT isn't as well known in the US yet but her new album, Euro-Country, is a masterpiece. The title track dives into the economic crisis after the Celtic Tiger in Ireland in the early 2000s. I knew nothing about it before this song and the song talks about how much it devastated families. I feel better for knowing the lyrics. It’s rare to see pop musicians use their platform to educate people about contemporary history, but CMAT does it brilliantly. More feminist pop, please!
Billy Joel: And So It Goes
Of COURSE I enjoy watching the two-part documentary series about Billy Joel. Do you have any idea how many times I've listened to Turnstiles or The Stranger since I was a kid? I admittedly didn't know a ton about his rise to fame or reception at that time, and I hadn't really thought about his records coming out at the same time as The Clash. It's a great watch so far! All I'm gonna say is listen to Only The Good Die Young and then go listen to Trust Your Gut...
Women Don’t Owe You Shit
The hat says it all. Hinterland's merch is on point, and this hat is a perfect statement piece. It means supporting a small business that’s doing awesome work and creating a really lovely space for folks in Portland. If you’re into some rad, feminist gear, check it out.
