More of This, Please x September 2024
You're reading GET IT TOGETHER, a weekly newsletter that covers punk/indie/pop music, visual art, and related topics. I speak from a queer-feminist perspective about things that are often adjacent to my own creative practice.
This is a free post, but you can support my work for $5/month by becoming a newsletter supporter or sharing this with a friend. Thanks for reading.
It seems like every day I'm learning about a new thing that could kill my dog. This weekend it was foxtails. My dog is fine but my yard is apparently a hellscape! I love learning new things, but between the snakes, the fire ants, the coyotes and now GRASS I've learned to just laugh at the fun facts thrown at me lately.
I'm actively recovering from burnout and leaning into the work that I'm excited about organically rather than what I think I should be doing. It's working well. I'm eating better. Sleeping more. Journaling a lot. Processing. Doing a lot of yard work. It's giving me more time to notice and appreciate things that are just for me. They all manage to throw a life raft when I'm just trying to keep it together. Here's this month's edition of "More of This, Please".
Phil Anderson Blythe
There's something about art that straddles the line between representation and abstraction that really resonates with me. Graphic and high-contrast colors in the mix hit me even harder. So finding the work of Phil Anderson Blythe was a great match and now I want to find a way to use more hot pink and orange in everything?
Bad Moves - Outta My Head
Smooth move titling an earworm "Outta My Head". The new Bad Moves song is instantly stuck in my head every time I so much as think about it for a moment. The video features Chris Gethard, Josh Gondelman and even Margaret Cho! Love a good music video cameo. Bad Moves always puts me in a good mood and they deserve to be on every playlist imho.
The EQ School
There's a lot of self-help roaming around the internet in a very feel-good lack-of-accountability kind of way, so it's refreshing to find Genny Rumancik's The EQ School that focuses on identifying emotional patterns and fostering emotional resilience. She even uses the term "big feelings" in the insta profile so it's obviously for me. If you're looking for some actionable thoughts and advice, The EQ School on Instagram is a great place to start. Genny also leads courses and workshops and other offerings but I've found all of her free content to also be legitimately helpful and illuminating.
Real Live of Mormon Wives
I rarely watch reality TV but think I need something this absurd right now. I don't understand what's happening. I just watched the first episode and now I think my face is stuck in a perpetual confused expression. Soft swinging. TikTok dancing. Somehow also being... Mormon? Straight people, can someone please explain to me wtf is happening here? Yeah, I don't know either but I'm riveted.
