More Of This, Please x November 2024
You're reading GET IT TOGETHER, a weekly newsletter about punk/indie/pop music and visual art from a queer-feminist perspective, exploring things that are adjacent to my own creative practice.
This is a free post, but you can support my work for $5/month by becoming a newsletter supporter or sharing this with a friend. Thanks for reading.
I need some wholesome, positive, actually doing something to help people options right now. Not to forget the things that need fixing, but to give me the energy to fight apathy and cynicism as much as I can. I'm a cynic to the point that nothing surprises me, but I haven't lost the will to work for change. Not yet. So here are some things that make me happy, that I want to emphasize in my life right now.
The Dad Rock That Made Me a Woman
Niko Stratis' first book is out May 6 and I am excited about it. It's memoirs-in-essays about dad rock and transness and to be honest anything that reexamines popular music through that lens, especially in personal essay form, is possibly the only thing I want to read right now. You can pre-order it now and to be honest if someone got this for me as a holiday gift while having to wait six months to read it, I would still be stoked.
Deprog
Tina Horn wrote a comic about a leather dyke who deprograms people escaping cults. I'm not making this up. It feels like someone took everything missing from my comics collection and put it in one description. Illustrated by Lisa Searle, it's a graphic novel I cannot wait to read. Horn's book of fetish cultural criticism, Why Are People Into That? also came out earlier this year.
Finch
"Your new self-care best friend." I'm pretty sure this app was made for children but it gamifies self-care and you can get points for whatever you want - anything from drinking water to listening to a new record or sketching for 30 minutes. So if you're looking for another method of creative discipline, this is one very viable option. You raise a small personified bird and other pets by completing regular tasks, doing breathing exercises, reflecting on your day, or other custom goals you set for yourself. This is the most wholesome thing I've done besides get really into pinball while drinking seltzer. We'll see how long it lasts for me but my friend code is EDK5WQGDGY if you need a lil' bird buddy.
Transanta
Transanta is a non-profit organization that helps fulfill wish lists for trans youth during the holiday season. You can make a direct impact on someone's life by buying an item that's sent to their undisclosed mailing address, keeping them anonymous. It is the only reason I will ever encourage someone to use Amazon, where the wishlists are hosted. 🎁 Click here to buy a gift.
