Last minute indy gift guide
You're reading GET IT TOGETHER, a weekly newsletter about punk/indie/pop music and visual art from a queer-feminist perspective, exploring things that are adjacent to my own creative practice.
This is a free post, but you can support my work for $5/month by becoming a newsletter supporter or sharing this with a friend. Thanks for reading.
This gift guide is obviously a bit late but some traveling delayed my own gift buying schedule so I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking about this season last minute, or buying gifts for people you'll see between now and the new year 😅
As much as this newsletter isn't about telling people what to buy 🤮 I think it would be weird for me to keep mentioning how much I loathe Amazon and not offer some other options to support artists and creators.
When in doubt, may I also suggest plants, a good ceramic mug, a gift certificate to your local independent movie theater, fun art supplies or fluffy house socks. That last one is something I never see outside of big box stores, so if someone knows fluffy house socks made by like a dyke in Maine or something I would 100% buy those socks!
In the interest of supporting independent artists and people in the music biz, here are a few things you for people in your life who like music or generally feral queer things.
Mood Machine: The Rise of Spotify and the Costs of the Perfect Playlist by Liz Pelly
It's easy to point to ways that streaming music has changed the economy of making music for the worse, but music journalist Liz Pelly took the time to dig deeper into the more sinister ways that Spotify has manipulated how we listen to music to benefit a select few. This is officially out January 7 - pre-orders are rad.
Band People: Life and Work in Popular Music by Franz Nicolay
If I had a better idea of just how many opportunities there are for artists and musicians outside of what we traditionally think of as songwriter, painter, animator, etc. I would've pursued things in a different way. So I'm glad this book exists, to take a look at what it's like to actually be a working musician whether that's a long term project or a hired gun or different kind of collaborator. Kinda wish I could've read this before Our Band Could Be Your Life.
The Harder I Fight The More I Love You by Neko Case
It's a memoir that comes out next month and I'm willing to bet a lot of money it's amazing because how could it not be?
Hinterland Empire
Coffee, clothing, and other gifts from a rad, queer shop in Portland. My first stop next time I visit.
Leif J Lee
It's actually just kinda fucked up that I don't own one of these tote bags yet.
And a reminder that you can still buy gifts for trans youth this holiday season via the Transanta project. ✨
