What I made in 2023

You're reading GET IT TOGETHER, a weekly newsletter that covers punk/indie/pop music, visual art, and related topics. I speak from a queer-feminist perspective about things that are often adjacent to my own creative practice.

This is a free post, but you can support my work for $5/month by becoming
a newsletter supporter or sharing this with a friend. Thanks for reading.

Last Saturday I was driving home from an errand and saw a chihuahua just hanging out on the sidewalk near my house. I live near busy streets that are also somehow home to coyotes, so this was no place for this dog to just be waltzing around.

Little buddy was a bit scared but had no interest in bolting, so I proceeded to slowly but surely befriend this tiny dog while it was trotting all over my neighborhood. I walked 2.5 miles that day following her until she finally followed ME into my backyard. I got a leash onto her and within a few minutes of walking around the neighborhood, we found her owner!

If the only thing I could say for myself in 2023 was "saved a tiny dog," I'd be pretty proud of myself.

That's not what happened though, and as I sit here in a bit of a daze from the past year, I'm happy about what I was able to accomplish with the help of some dear friends. The following covers the larger points and helps me remember that I need some rest! I have some fun things to announce for next year, but for the next few weeks, I'm going to focus on bringing more "extra stuff" to newsletter Supporters including more live streaming. Stay tuned!

The items on the list below are what you can see and hear, but they don't include all the moments with friends, the new skills, the books I half-read, or the plants we kept alive. They don't include the frustrations and hurdles and stress and lack of sleep. A list like this is made despite those things, in service of all the small good things, of nice memories with the other people in my life. I can't believe we pulled all of these things off, and I'm very grateful that y'all have supported me and my bandmates and collaborators along the way.
