More or Less 2024

You're reading GET IT TOGETHER, a weekly newsletter that covers punk/indie/pop music, visual art, and related topics. I speak from a queer-feminist perspective about things that are often adjacent to my own creative practice.

This is a free post, but you can support my work for $5/month by becoming
a newsletter supporter or sharing this with a friend. Thanks for reading.

I have never wanted a break or even just a long nap more than I did towards the end of 2023. So I developed something resembling a daily routine, started moving a bit slower, and started spending more time with my friends. I was in desperate need of a vacation and clawed back as much free time as possible.

After about five minutes of a power nap... we're back at it.

Starting February 22, Worriers will be joining Alkaline Trio on their US tour along with Drug Church. This was just too good to pass up.

In an effort to start 2024 on the right foot and not end up in the same boat come December, here are some Ins and Outs:

Ins

  • Following friends playlists
  • Waking up at 7am every morning
  • 8 hours of sleep per night
  • Reading short stories
  • Impulse buying poetry books
  • Being mediocre at pinball
  • Small drawings
  • Date nights
  • The good bottle of wine
  • Complicated salads
  • Staycation
  • Notion templates
  • Ghost

Outs

  • Being too busy to hang out
  • Being too busy to take political action
  • Apathy
  • Watching shows that you know are just queer-baiting
  • Not knowing the closest good coffee place to sit for a long time
  • Only trying the new things you're already good at
  • Staying in
  • Forgetting to text back
  • Substack
  • Twitter

Every year I get better at consistently keeping the Ins and losing the Outs. It's a nice exercise at remembering what keeps me afloat.

Added bonus: Earlier this year my friends in Bad Moves put out a great new song called "New Year's Reprieve". Very on-theme for me right now. Go check it out here:
