More of This, Please x November + December 2023

You're reading GET IT TOGETHER, a weekly newsletter that covers punk/indie/pop music, visual art, and related topics. I speak from a queer-feminist perspective about things that are often adjacent to my creative practice.

This is a free post, but you can support my work for $5/month by becoming
a newsletter supporter or sharing this with a friend. Thanks for reading.

My 2024 Monthly Calendar Zine is here! A downloadable PDF zine that you can print at home or your local FedEx and pretend it's still called Kinkos. Newsletter Supporters get it for free but everyone else can get the file for $5 here.

Happy Carol Aird's Lost Glove Month to those who celebrate. In a world that is increasingly falling apart, in which I just want to scream into the void, I struggled to find a few good things for us all this month. Outside of dogs in sweaters and Matt Berry supercuts, here are a few good things keeping my head above water:

Criminal - The Kit

Trigger warning: SA
In the age of True Crime podcasts where many just end up gawking at scandal and violence, the podcast Criminal regularly shares stories that give context to larger narratives around crime. This week's episode was about the history of "rape kits" and Marty Goddard, the truly badass feminist who created them. She fought tooth and nail for survivors and got funding from none other than The Playboy Foundation (yep, that one!) to fund them. Regardless of your feelings on our current criminal justice system, hearing the history of just getting medical professionals to collect evidence correctly is truly wild. But the story of how one single person - without immense wealth or power behind her - could play such a critical role in the narrative around assault and consent is equally inspiring.

Paws

Worriers just played ten shows with our new Scottish pals Paws and they're true gems both as people and as a band. They just put out a new album this fall that also comes with an art zine and I'm just psyched that our paths got to cross for a couple of weeks in November. Check out their older song "Sore Tummy" below.

Blue Eye Samurai

I'm a few episodes into this animated series on Netflix and all I can say is that I didn't know I needed an ancient androgynous sexy samurai revenge story in my life, but here we are! This show has EVERYTHING: they/them samurai fight scenes, defiant women kicking ass in brothels, body positivity, revenge for something I don't totally understand yet... it's pretty cool so far. After being on tour for a million years this is a beautiful reprieve from work.

Aimee Mann - Voices Carry @ The Ritz in 1986

I briefly forgot how punk as fuck Aimee Mann is and needed to remind everyone. Somehow this video came up this week, a 1986 performance of the hit 'Til Tuesday song "Voices Carry", which immediately reminded me. I had also forgotten about how she more recently did a shot-for-shot remake of the official "Voices Carry" music video for her song "Labrador" featuring John Hamm, Jon Wurster, and Ted Leo, directed by Tom Scharpling. Both the video and the song are A+.
