I've been taking things really slow since I got home from tour and have been making up for lost time, not committing to anything more than I absolutely have to in order to just take care of myself and my dog and my side of the street. I spent the past four days in the high desert, visiting friends, reading, playing guitar and just exploring. I really needed that.

I don't need to tell you how some things in the world are loudly falling apart, and while I do think everyone needs to engage with it somehow, there has to be something to balance out the sad.

Here's this month's short list of things that help keep my head above water:

Jumbo Rocks

If you've never seen jumbo rocks - the giant smooth boulders littering certain parts of Southern California - you must. They're my favorite thing to drive through on tour and now my favorite thing to hike across. They always make me think of the rock world in The NeverEnding Story, as if I'm on another planet and are just so. cool. Next time I want to go camping so I can bring Lucy and at least let her see some of them (no dogs allowed on the trails 😢).

There's Always This Year: On Basketball and Ascension

I wouldn't expect anything less but author and poet Hanif Abdurraqib has published another gut punch of a book that is technically about basketball but is really about everything. I will read anything he writes but I'm constantly struck by how powerfully he can write about place and love and creativity in ways you wouldn't expect, making connections in a way that pulls at sentimentality without being corny. I'm really enjoying this read.

Eternity Fern

Spotted at a little art market out in the desert this weekend, the work of an artist named Anthony, aka Eternity Fern, is a mix of classic tattoo graphic drawing, neon colors, and weird animals. In addition to prints, hats, patches, etc. they're also a tattoo artist and primarily do custom work. Now the question is, do I get a dog tattoo?
