A year of small victories

You're reading GET IT TOGETHER, a weekly newsletter about punk/indie/pop music and visual art from a queer-feminist perspective, exploring things that are adjacent to my own creative practice.

This is a free post, but you can support my work for $5/month by becoming
a newsletter supporter or sharing this with a friend. Thanks for reading.

My "new year" started July 1 when I moved into a house in the Mojave desert, just me and my dog. I'm a big believer in starting a new phase whenever you feel like it, though January 1 is always a nice option, too. I've also been in the habit of personal weekly reflections, whether that's on progress or just feelings and that's a better strategy for me than solely doing a year-long look back.

There's a lot of 2024 that I've thrown directly in the bin already, which to be honest is a great feeling. Raising some social and emotional standards, so to speak. I don't want 2025 to be different so much as I want to keep the momentum going, keep the positive consistency.

Six months into my own personal New Year, I'm proud to celebrate the following victories:

  • No longer giving my money to a landlord, a fact I remind myself every time I wish I still lived in Los Angeles
  • Having a consistent fitness practice that's inspired not by physical goals but by owing it to my mental health (read: trying to not walk into the ocean)
  • Listening to ten audiobooks thanks to more long drives
  • Completing an emotional intelligence course that has been, building off years of therapy, the best thing I've done for myself maybe ever?
  • Being accepted into the Notion Ambassador program that I'll start next week - no idea what it will mean for me other than probably being more insufferable about using that platform but I'm looking forward to it
  • Taking a break from touring to recalibrate after intense burnout
  • Challenging myself to go to a couple πŸ”₯ events and they ruled
  • Adopting a friend's upright piano so now I can write on the full 88 keys (and play the Jurassic Park theme whenever I want)

In the next six months I could be better at:

  • texting friends
  • listening to new music
  • going on walks in Joshua Tree (it's right. there.)
  • cooking for friends at my house
  • sharing demos and recording music at home
  • completing a slew of half-finished paintings

I'm currently reading The Way of Transition by William Bridges.

I'm currently watching Squid Game 2.

I'm currently listening to Medium Build, Orla Gartland, and The Indigo Girls.

How about you?

Next up will be some changes to the subscription side of this newsletter to be more accurate and also actually engaging. More on that in the coming days, I promise. Thank you for being here and sticking with me. More music and art are coming soon. For now, please leave questions and requests in the comments or just hit reply.

P.S. - Worriers is playing Pouzza Fest in Montreal in May. I would love to see you there.
